01 — The ProblemHow Stripe's Country Requirement Works
Stripe requires your business to be registered in a supported country to create a Stripe account and accept card payments. This is a registration requirement — not a residence requirement. Stripe checks where your company is legally incorporated, not where you personally live.
This distinction is the key to the solution. You do not need to move countries, obtain residency, or acquire a new passport. You simply need to register a legitimate business entity in a country that Stripe supports. Once you have a company, a tax ID, and a bank account in that country, you register Stripe under it — and accept payments from customers anywhere in the world.
Stripe's country restriction applies to where your business is registered — not where your customers are. A US LLC Stripe account accepts payments from customers in 195+ countries. Stripe supports 135+ currencies and dozens of local payment methods. Registering in a supported country does not limit who you can sell to.
02 — Stripe CountriesStripe Supported Countries (2026)
As of March 2026, Stripe's official supported countries list includes approximately 47 countries. Any of these is a valid option for company registration — you are not limited to the US and UK. Always verify the current list at stripe.com/global before making decisions, as Stripe regularly expands coverage.
Standard white tags are fully supported. Teal tags = Stripe Extended Network via Paystack (different features and fees). Yellow tags = Preview, contact Stripe sales for access.
03 — The SolutionRegister a Company in a Stripe-Supported Country
To access Stripe from an unsupported country, you need three things in a supported jurisdiction:
04 — Why US or UKWhy We Recommend the US and UK
While any Stripe-supported country is technically valid, the US and UK offer the best combination of factors for non-resident founders worldwide:
| Factor | US LLC | UK Ltd |
|---|---|---|
| Non-resident formation | ✓ No citizenship or residency requirement | ✓ No citizenship or residency requirement |
| Formation speed | Wyoming: 1 business day. Other states vary. | 3–5 business days via Companies House |
| Corporatee service cost | $699 — includes registered agent, formation, document delivery | $599 — includes registered office address and formation |
| Annual maintenance (Corporatee) | $299/year to keep company active and compliant | $299/year to keep company active and compliant |
| Tax filing (Corporatee) | From $649/year | From $649/year |
| Tax rates | No US federal income tax in most non-resident cases with no US operations. Form 5472 mandatory (see Section 10). | 19% on profits up to £50,000; 25% above £250,000 per HMRC |
| Owner privacy | Wyoming, New Mexico, and Delaware do not publish owner names in public records | Director and shareholder names publicly listed on Companies House |
| Stripe feature access | ✓ Full — widest product set | ✓ Full |
| Global credibility | ✓ Very high worldwide | ✓ Very high, especially in Europe |
| Remote process | ✓ 100% remote, no travel required | ✓ 100% remote, no travel required |
Singapore, Estonia, Canada, Hong Kong, and Ireland also allow non-resident formation and are Stripe-supported. Singapore and Hong Kong are popular for Asia-Pacific founders. Estonia's e-Residency enables digital company management but requires applying for a physical e-Residency card (several weeks). Canada requires at least 25% Canadian-resident directors in most provinces. These are all valid — the US and UK simply offer the most accessible and lowest-friction path for the broadest range of global founders.
05 — LegalityIs It Legal?
Yes — registering a company in the US or UK as a non-resident and using it to accept Stripe payments is entirely legal, provided the company is genuine and you represent your information accurately.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can a non-citizen own a US LLC? | ✓ Yes. The IRS explicitly recognizes foreign-owned LLCs. No citizenship or residency requirement under US law. |
| Can a non-citizen own a UK Ltd? | ✓ Yes. The UK's Companies Act 2006 places no nationality or residency restrictions on directors or shareholders. |
| Is forming abroad just to access Stripe allowed? | ✓ Yes, if the company is a genuine operating business. Registering a real entity is not misrepresentation. A fraudulent shell with no actual business activity violates Stripe's terms. |
| Do I need to disclose my home country to Stripe? | ✓ Yes — and Stripe accepts this. During KYC, Stripe asks for your personal country of residence. Non-resident owners of US and UK companies are a standard accepted profile at Stripe. |
| Does my home country have any restrictions? | ⚠ Check locally. US and UK law permit this structure, but your home country may have foreign exchange controls, reporting requirements for foreign company ownership, or personal income tax obligations. Consult a local advisor. |
Stripe's Services Agreement prohibits misrepresentation. Never claim a US or UK address as your personal residential address if you do not live there. Never use another person's identity. An honestly operated foreign-owned company is fully compliant — fraud is not.
Both the US and UK allow company registration by citizens of any country in the world — the only exception is if you personally are subject to international sanctions. However, opening a business bank account is a separate matter. Banks apply their own compliance rules and will decline applicants from high-risk jurisdictions, including Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, and other sanctioned or FATF-blacklisted countries. Before starting the process, check the prohibited-country list for every bank you plan to use. A company you cannot bank is a company you cannot use.
06 — RequirementsWhat You Need Before Activating Stripe

07 — ProcessStep-by-Step: From Zero to Accepting Payments
Check Stripe's supported countries
Go to stripe.com/global and confirm your home country is not fully supported. If your country is in Preview status, contact Stripe sales first — you may get access without forming a foreign company.
Form your company in a supported country
For a US LLC: Corporatee handles the full process including registered agent address. Wyoming forms in 1 business day; other states vary. For a UK Ltd: Corporatee handles formation including UK registered office address. 3–5 business days. Director identity verification is now mandatory for new UK company directors from November 2025 — Corporatee handles this as part of the process. Full formation guides for both US LLC and UK Ltd are available as separate articles on Corporatee.
Obtain your tax identification number
For a US LLC: apply for an EIN from the IRS by faxing Form SS-4 — write "Foreign" on Line 7b. Standard IRS processing takes approximately 2 weeks to receive the EIN by fax, plus 1–2 more weeks for the CP 575 letter to arrive by mail. With Corporatee's expedited EIN service, the faxed EIN confirmation arrives in 3 business days. The faxed confirmation is accepted by Stripe and all major banks — you do not need to wait for the CP 575.
For a UK Ltd: HMRC issues a UTR automatically within 2–3 weeks of registration. Register for Corporation Tax with HMRC within three months of starting to trade.
→ Corporatee's expedited EIN: 3 business daysOpen a business bank account
You need a business bank account in your company's jurisdiction to receive Stripe payouts. Check each platform's prohibited-country list before applying — you typically have only one attempt per platform. A declined application is almost never reversible. Full options in Section 08.
Register your Stripe account under your company's country
Go to dashboard.stripe.com/register. When Stripe asks for your country, select the country where your company is registered — United States or United Kingdom. You cannot change the country after account creation. Enter your company's legal name, registered address, tax ID (EIN or UTR), and a specific description of your business.
When Stripe asks for beneficial owner details, provide your actual personal home country address and nationality. Non-resident owners are a standard Stripe profile — do not misrepresent this.
Complete identity verification and connect your bank account
Stripe runs KYC on your business and on you as the beneficial owner. Upload your passport and company formation documents when prompted. Stripe may also request home address confirmation — a utility bill or bank statement showing your name and address from the last 6 months. Verification typically completes within 1–2 business days.
To connect your bank account, navigate to Settings → Bank accounts and scheduling in your Stripe dashboard. Enter your bank account details. Stripe will verify the account through its own verification process — the exact method depends on the bank and account type. Once verified, your account can accept live payments.
→ You can now accept payments from customers worldwide08 — BankingBanking Options by Jurisdiction

09 — Stripe SetupRegistering and Activating Your Stripe Account
After completing Steps 1–4, here is what Stripe accepts from non-resident business owners and what documents it may request during verification.
What Stripe Accepts from Non-Resident Business Owners
Documents Stripe May Request
| Stripe May Request | What to Provide |
|---|---|
| Personal identity document | Valid unexpired passport. Stripe accepts foreign passports for non-resident beneficial owners. |
| Home address confirmation | A utility bill or bank statement with your full name and home address, dated within the last 6 months. Must be a different document from your ID. |
| Company formation documents | Articles of Organization (US LLC) or Certificate of Incorporation (UK Ltd) proving your company is real and matches your application details. |
| Business description | A clear explanation of what you sell, who your customers are, and how you earn revenue. Be specific — generic descriptions delay verification. |
10 — Tax ObligationsWhat Taxes Do You Owe?
Tax obligations vary by jurisdiction and personal situation. The overview below is informational only — always consult a qualified tax advisor.
US LLC
| Obligation | Details |
|---|---|
| IRS Form 5472 | Mandatory annual information return for all foreign-owned single-member LLCs. Filed with a pro-forma Form 1120 by April 15. Penalty for non-filing: $25,000 per form. See IRS Form 5472 guidance. This is a reporting requirement, not a tax — but the penalty is severe and actively enforced. Required even in years with zero income. |
| US Federal Income Tax | If your LLC has no US employees, no US office, and services are performed outside the US, income is generally considered foreign-source and not subject to US federal income tax. See IRS Effectively Connected Income guidance. |
| Stripe 1099 reporting | Stripe may issue a 1099 form to the IRS for US accounts meeting reporting thresholds. This is an information report — it confirms your Stripe revenue to the IRS but does not automatically create a US tax liability. See Stripe tax reporting documentation. |
| Home country personal tax | Income you receive from the LLC is typically taxable in your home country. Rules vary significantly — consult a local advisor. |
UK Ltd
| Obligation | Details |
|---|---|
| Corporation Tax | 19% on profits up to £50,000; 25% above £250,000; marginal relief between these thresholds. Confirmed for 2025 and 2026 by HMRC. Due 9 months and 1 day after accounting period end. |
| Annual Accounts + CT600 | Annual accounts filed with Companies House (9 months after period end). Corporation Tax Return (CT600) filed with HMRC within 12 months. Register for Corporation Tax within 3 months of starting to trade. |
| Confirmation Statement | Filed with Companies House once per year. Currently £50 online. Required for all active UK companies. |
| VAT | Required if UK VAT-taxable turnover exceeds £90,000. Standard rate: 20%. |
| Home country personal tax | Income you receive from the UK company is typically taxable in your home country. Consult a local advisor. |
Once your US LLC has an EIN, annual Form 5472 filing is mandatory — every year the LLC exists, including years with no income. The $25,000 per-form penalty is one of the harshest IRS penalties for informational returns. Do not neglect this.
